Who says the end of the year "winds down" once Spring arrives? Not Piedmont! This week we have returned from Spring Break ready for learning about Earth Day, Finanicial Literacy, and Digital Citizenship among many other things. Photos are below. Check out the front of the school for clever sixth grade Earth Day Chalk Messages (it even lasted through the Earth Day rain!) 8th Graders Packed the house to here our guest speaker about a topic too often ignored in school: financial literacy. The financial expert, brought in by Mr. Parkins, spoke to 8th grade social studies classes about saving, good financial habits, financial literacy and best practices. I learned a little something myself, and this is a topic that will help these students for years to come! Check out the seventh graders' Digital Citizenship superhero messages below. They made them during their science class lessons about best practices when learning, researching, and socializing online.

Instead of just talking about Europe in their social studies and language arts classes, Ms. Kay and Ms. McCarthy took their students there to experience the continent first hand. They chaperoned a guided tour to England and France. Here are a few highlights of the trip. Not only were there big lessons learned, but students also got a chance to make connections between history and cultures and to be middle schoolers on a whole other continent. If you still need a reason to appreciate the gift travel is for a young mind (or an old mind) Check out Annie Murphy Paul's recent writings on how travel changes people and makes them more creative. Happy Spring Break Everyone! Thank you for being at Piedmont. Be sure to check out the other Celebrating Piedmont posts in addition to the other pages of this site like news and lesson ideas because I have seen the best teaching I've seen in 25 years as a teacher this past weeks, and that includes my own! Enjoy your break and I will miss you!
Here are a few photos of great learning going on around Piedmont this week including Advisory and 6th grade flower dissection. I made separate posts for the religious tolerance museum and love of learning (check back there soon for a video of what was the best event I've ever seen in 25 years of teaching. I used 100% of my battery capturing only a sliver of the awesome.) Thank you Piedmont! Have a Great Spring Break! |

Author"Celebrating Piedmont" logs only a small fraction of the learning magic the teachers of CMS' Piedmont Middle School, an IB World School. create daily. In that sense, it is authored by all the staff and students of Piedmont. It is curated by Ms. Gurthie who can be reached at the icons above. She'll be happy to brag about Piedmont's teachers and students any chance she gets! Please note this blog has only just begun and we have so much to show off! Come back again soon! |
