The Piedmont Student Council along with Ms. Beckham and Mr. Chandler hosted a Black History Month program today at Piedmont IB. The program featured spoken word poetry by Mr. Kyle Onuma, three songs from the Piedmont Black History Month Choir, a speech from Charlotte Civil Rights history icon and guest of honor Dorothy Counts Scoggins, step and inspiration from UNC Charlotte AKAs and Alphas, and adocumentary of the Leadership Class.
The first clip below is a video introduces the event and stops just as Ms. Counts Scoggins begins her speech. That part is cut off but included many inspiring as well as heartbreaking stories of her experience as a black high school student desegregating Charlotte schools. Ms Counts Scoggins heard adults instruct children to spit on her. She was ignored in class, shoved in the halls, & her food spit on at lunch. She made only one friend, or so she thought. Unfortunately, The next day that "friend" averted her eyes and turned away silently when she saw Dorothy coming toward her.
