Part 2: The Afternoon

All these photos were shot this afternoon on a typical day of tech infusion at Piedmont.

Each morning of Black History Month, Ms. Lyttle's Language Arts classes use their chromebooks to research a different figure in African American History. Students share what they find in their research and make a poster of the most fascinating facts together. This young woman posts Jackie Robinson's facts on the African American History Wall for all students to read and be inspired by.

POST 1 of 2: A Typical Digital Morning

Piedmont Celebrates a full Year of 1:1 Chromebooks, Personalized Learning, and BYOT with "DLD Around the CLock"

None of these events were designed for (or are unique to) Digital Learning Day! This is just a typical day in the life of a connected school full of happy student empowered by technology!

Picture
Question: How does school look when students and teachers are fortunate enough to take digital integration for granted ?

Answer: Come see Piedmont! It's Digital Learning 24/7/365 nowadays in CMS schools thanks to our cutting edge Instructional Technology support!

Piedmont Middle School celebrates organic edtech integration with this
"DLD Around the Clock"

hourly log of the amazing results of our 1:1, Personalized Learning and BYOT.

7:45 AM:
 Teacher Professional Development Online Webinar

Picture
The world language department gathers as a PLC to complete their webinars for IB training. The webinars were given in California but through the magic of the internet, IB teachers around the globe can participate.

Being a connected educator is what it's all about in the 21st century, but so is having the benefit of discussing live with your coworkers.

In this photo Mrs. Coriale types the PLC's answers into the Google Doc while Mrs. Lugo runs the webinar and Mrs. Madan reads the live chat box comments from teachers around the globe.

(Sorry, Senor Kennedy, I only got your shoulder in the shot!)

8:45 AM:
Students Arrive With their Handmade Inventions

The car rider lot at Piedmont is always an interesting place due to all of our Project-Based Learning assignments. Today these ladies stopped on the way into school to let me photograph their Industrial revolution inventions. The students in Ms. Thornburg's class replicate them from recycled materials with some help from online historical research and DIY instructional websites...and ingenuity! Their teams will compete for the best factory later today in Humanities class.

WEbsites and Online Learning Management Systems Help Students Learn in teacher's Absence

Picture
Mr. Egnot was out today, but his students kept learning thanks to tech. The sign on his door instructed these girls  in the work they needed to complete, conveniently accesible on his wiki website! And it works both ways, students have facetimed their groupmates when they are absent to still work together from home!

9:30 AM:
Old School Math Lesson Enhanced with Tech!

Mr. Kollar found the solution to not having enough math manipulatives for all his classes:  BYOT technology

 TRIAL Reenactment Relies on Tech

Picture

Court is in Session, and digital tools are essential to the case!
Student Lawyers use mobile tech as teleprompters for jury remarks.

Journalistic Photographers capture the trail using digital cameras.

Video evidence is shown to the jury via projector (hosted on YouTube)

EVERYTHING FROM LEGAL BRIEFS TO DIARY NOTES WERE PREPARED IN GAFE (Google Apps for Education) allowing English Language Arts teacher Mr. Milligan to correct errors and provide feedback to students at all times, not just at the end of the extensive simulation that brings the novel The Pigman to life.

Photography Class - Made Possible By Online Learning

Thanks to North Carolina Virtual Public School, Piedmont Students can take a photography course in Middle School.
PictureStudent watches an instructional video hosted on his Photography teacher's Learning Management System portal.

10:30 AM
 New Staff Member Gets Connected

Mrs. Arroyo knows one of the first things she needs to do as our new testing coordinator is hook up the essential tools of her trade: her computer and printer.
Before long her desk will look like Mrs' Lyttle's Education Command Center. 1,2,3,4, count 'em 5 screens all going at once as she gives the media center students live feedback on their work, grades in google classroom, prepares the next day's Black History Month research warm-up, and projects the 6th grade project directions.

Picture
"Mr. O'Neill calls this my world domination station" Mrs. Lyttle is the muiti-tech-ing master.

10:45 AM
 MAkerspace supports Personalized Digital Learning

Our Media Center makerspace has become a learning commons, a hub for all kinds of Digitally Connected passion projects and PBLS like these:
Picture
students who already knew the sixth grade mathematics lessons can compact out: they report to the MakerSpace every day to design and build a bridge instead.
Picture
This scholar shows his teacher's instant comments to his group's project proposal. He shared the document with her and she can assist in real time.

Bye for now! See you in Post 2 for our Digital Afternoon!

Picture
Not only do they use tech to decide on bridge design, they also write a research paper about the engineering,

ALL DAY, EVERYDAY:

students learn in comfort of NEW Personalized Learning Environments

Sure, I took this picture in Mrs. Lyttle's room. Its her combined class with Mrs. Malone,  but it could have been taken on any day since Mrs. Lyttle got that new sofa and comfy seating in her room. Now students choose where to work and work in comfort on the device of their choice. They get a little more ownership in their day and desks are available if they prefer that seating. But I'd be right her with them!

    Author

"Celebrating Piedmont" logs only a small fraction of the learning magic the teachers of CMS' Piedmont Middle School, an IB World School. create daily. In that sense, it is authored by all the staff and students of Piedmont.  It is curated by Ms. Gurthie who can be reached at the icons above. She'll be happy to brag about Piedmont's teachers and students any chance she gets!  Please note this blog has only just begun and we have so much to show off! Come back again soon!
