You gotta love when your school is referred to as a "powerhouse" on a Science Olympiad national website.

Powerhouse indeed we are, with a top 13 finish this weekend at the Science Olympiad National Tournament in Wisconsin, despite some wild mishaps. Special props to Jessica Cui and Vivien Liebler who took 1st  place in the Nation as the Piedmont Crimebusters team!

This marks the third year of top national standing for the "powerhouse" team (I'm just going to keekp using that term)  which has only existed since 2010. Last year the team finished 4th in the nation and the year before Piedmont finished 9th.

Good job, teachers, and coaches and especially students! Your hard work and dedication paid off!

Of Brazil and Bananas

Piedmont alumna (Mr. Joyce and I taught both her!) Amanda Hardie made a visit back to Piedmont as a guest speaker in Mr. O'Neill's classes.

Ms. Grossman called me up to capture a bit of her talk and i am so glad she did. Not only did it warm my social studies heart to see an old student as an anthropologist, but I also am now dissuaded of the monkey/banana stereotype!

Most important,  our students learned and got a chance to see an academic life that happens outside of 4 walls of a classroom.

Good luck to Ms. Hardie as she continues her work at the University of Wisconsin Madison and in forests of Brazil. We are  proud of you!

Tales from the Hallway

A series of six student-written and student-directed original plays, titled "Tales from the Hallway" was performed Friday in the auditorium. In typical Piedmont fashion, the plays did not sugar-coat,  but explored how the issues young people care about- from LGBT rights, to recycling; bullying to parenting- play out in real life today.

The students were so good in their roles that I am still typecasting them as I see them in the halls-trying not to be mad at the mean girls!

PictureJumping jack Tuesday means Jumping Jacks for Ms. Malone's Brain Break.
As part of the peer walk-through initiatives by the the Piedmont Middle Instructional Leadership Team (ILT) Ms. Barone, Ms. Adornato and I walked through sixth grade Tuesday morning.  In the space of an hour, just minutes in each class, this is a snippet of what was going on.

From quiet rooms with zen like atmosphere, to rooms buzzing with excitement, from test prep tips to virtual field trips to Florence,  from an exercises in expanding one's individual perception inspired by Dead Poet's society to EOG fact reviews  If I had to choose a word to describe sixth grade, I'd say  "amazeballs" is about right.

"Celebrating Piedmont" logs only a small fraction of the learning magic the teachers of CMS' Piedmont Middle School, an IB World School. create daily. In that sense, it is authored by all the staff and students of Piedmont.  It is curated by Ms. Gurthie who can be reached at the icons above. She'll be happy to brag about Piedmont's teachers and students any chance she gets!  Please note this blog has only just begun and we have so much to show off! Come back again soon!
