Building Racecars for Science

3/27/2019

Mr. Anderson's room was abuzz with action Friday. Bottle caps became wheels and science theory became tested as students designed and built their own race cars.

Any lesson that involves power tools is a good one in my book, but another thing Mr Anderson's lesson highlights is how a teacher enriches students learning when they bring their own strengths and passions into the classroom and that happens in the 7th grade teamwide on the regular. (Looking at you, George, Hagerman, Milligan, Egnot, Ciambrone, Potter,...) What a beautiful thing to see Mr Anderson's gift with building (and expertise from the Lego Store!) being shared with the students toward mastery of their curriculum.

Thanks for setting up these work stations and offering this experience for our students. What a great follow-up to the NASCAR engineering lesson earlier this year. (scroll to the last Twitter link below for video of that 7th grade special event with a Piedmont Alum as teacher)

You gotta love when your school is referred to as a "powerhouse" on a Science Olympiad national website.

Powerhouse indeed we are, with a top 13 finish this weekend at the Science Olympiad National Tournament in Wisconsin, despite some wild mishaps. Special props to Jessica Cui and Vivien Liebler who took 1st  place in the Nation as the Piedmont Crimebusters team!

This marks the third year of top national standing for the "powerhouse" team (I'm just going to keekp using that term)  which has only existed since 2010. Last year the team finished 4th in the nation and the year before Piedmont finished 9th.

Good job, teachers, and coaches and especially students! Your hard work and dedication paid off!

Piedmont IB  1st in State!

Picture
Piedmont Middle School's Science Olympiad team won first place at the state competition on Wednesday. Students competed in 24 events ranging from test events about Fossils, lab events like Crime Busters, to engineering events such as Elastic Launch Glider.

Faculty members Heidi Phillips, Robert Egnot, and Nicholas Ciambrone as well as parent and community volunteers coached the students as they worked all year on their problems, some of which involve college level science.

Coach Phillips says " I am in awe of the effort that I see every Saturday, before school, and after school that keeps this team as successful as it is. Everyone in this program deserves recognition for the success earned this past Saturday. It was truly a team effort."

Scores were announced to cheers and students joyfully accepted their medals and 1st place trophy on the NC State University stage. They look forward to traveling to Wisconsin to compete at the National Science Olympiad in May.

Piedmont's Media Specialist Lisa Newburger was chosen by  Syracuse University as one of only 10 school librarians nationwide for the  Young Innovators Project's Mentoring Group.

Because of Mrs. Newburger's outstanding qualifications and vison, the students of Piedmont will have an opportunity to participate in this mentoring program.

The Young Innovators Project  selected only those librarians who had:

Media Specialist Wins Award for Technology Innovation

http://ncties.org/conference/recognitions/media/On March 4th in Raleigh North Carolina, Piedmont's own Lisa Newburger was awarded the 2016 NCTIES Media Specialist Technology Innovation Award.

Mrs. Newburger’s innovativeMakerSpace supports and enhances the 7th grade’s STEAM-based projects at Piedmont Middle School, including Ms. Gorman and Ms. Palgut's innovative “Scale Model Project” and “Design a Game Board” projects. For example, with the media center’s purchase of the MakerBot Replicator 2, Mrs. Gorman’s students were able to use Computer Assisted Design programs and 3D printing technology to create game pieces giving the projects a 21st century upgrade.

The student-created products are not only used within the 7th grade math curriculum they also provide inspiration for every Piedmont student to design and create something spectacular because they’re showcased year round in the media center.  By regularly providing project workspace, jury and exhibition space, tech and craft materials and research support in her Media Center MakerSpace, Mrs. Newburger advances STEAM education schoolwide.

The award came with a $1,000 check for Piedmont's Media Center, but, of course we know that Mrs. Newburger, Gorman, Palgut and Peterson are all priceless to Piedmont. We appreciate their contributions to our student's learning everyday.

During her acceptance speech, Mrs Newburger received a standing ovation from her fellow media specialists for advocating for librarians tech leaders around the state.  She will be innovating on a national stage next year as part of the Syracuse University Young innovators project mentoring group.

"Celebrating Piedmont" logs only a small fraction of the learning magic the teachers of CMS' Piedmont Middle School, an IB World School. create daily. In that sense, it is authored by all the staff and students of Piedmont.  It is curated by Ms. Gurthie who can be reached at the icons above. She'll be happy to brag about Piedmont's teachers and students any chance she gets!  Please note this blog has only just begun and we have so much to show off! Come back again soon!
